Comrade Obafemi Oyenubi, National President, Nigeria Union of Agriculture and Allied Employees Credit: NUAAE
The Nigeria Union of Agriculture and Allied Employees (NUAAE) has taken a major stride towards unity with the recent election of Comrade Obafemi Oyenubi as its new National President. This election follows a successful reconciliation process among previously divided factions, facilitated by senior union members committed to restoring harmony within the union.
The newly established national transition committee includes Comrade Benco Hameed Ademola as Deputy National President I, Comrade Aniedi Abasi Ekpo as Deputy National President II, and Comrade Segun Victor Alemeru as National Treasurer.
Regional Vice Presidents have also been elected, with Comrade Kabiru Haruna Mafara representing the North West, Comrade Ayodeji Frances for the South West, Comrade Buhari Dame Tanimu for the North East, Comrade Nwagu Christopher for the South East, Comrade Joseph Sunday Asaolu for the North Central, and Comrade Monday Okorocha for the South-South regions.
Additional officers include Comrade Saudat Abubakar as National Women Coordinator, Comrade Priscilla N. Bulus as Deputy National Women Coordinator, Comrade Absalom Lansibo Akwara as Auditor I, Comrade Nwekwuru Vitus Amaechi as Auditor II, Comrade Ime Akpdiaha as Public Relations Officer, and Comrade Moses Baba Umoru as Acting General Secretary.
The NUAAE, affiliated with the Nigeria Labour Congress, traces its roots to 1978, when multiple agricultural unions united to form the Agricultural and Allied Workers Union of Nigeria. Since then, the union has evolved, notably merging with the Agricultural and Allied Senior Staff Association in 2008 to become the Agricultural and Allied Employees’ Union of Nigeria. However, some members opposed the merger and continued under the original name until they formally unified with AAEUN in 2019.
The union also commended President Bola Tinubu for enacting the N70,000 per month National Minimum Wage Bill on July 29, 2024, marking an important milestone in supporting Nigerian workers’ rights.
